Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins on January 25, 1938) is an American blues, soul, R&B, and jazz singer and songwriter. In the 1950s and 60s, she had her biggest success as a blues and R&B singer. She is best known for her 1961 ballad "At Last", which has been classified as a "timeless classic" and has been featured in many movies and television commercials since its release.

Early life and career

Jamesetta Hawkins was born in Los Angeles, California to an unmarried 16-year-old black mother, Dorothy Hawkins. She claimed that her mother told her that her father was the white Rudolph "Minnesota Fats" Wanderone, and that they received financial support from him on the condition that they keep his paternity a secret. She received her first professional vocal training at the age of five years old, from James Earle Hines, musical director of the Echoes of Eden choir at St. Paul Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

James' family moved to San Francisco in 1950 and James soon teamed up with two other girls to form a Doo Wop singing group. When the girls were fourteen, band leader Johnny Otis had them audition: they sang an answer to Hank Ballard's "Work With Me, Annie" called "Roll With Me Henry." Otis particularly liked the song, and against her mother's wishes, James and the trio went to Los Angeles to record the song in 1954. The song was recorded under the label Modern Records. By this time, the trio renamed the song "The Wallflower (Dance with Me, Henry)" and released it in 1955. James named her vocal group The Peaches. Richard Berry, a Los Angeles Doo Wop luminary is featured on some of their records.

Success

There are at least two versions of how Johnny Otis discovered Etta James: Otis's version is that she came to his hotel room after one of his performances in San Francisco and persuaded him to audition her. Another frequently told story is that Otis spotted her performing in an L.A. nightclub with The Peaches and, having conceived of the answer song to Hank Ballard's "Work With Me, Annie," arranged with the Bihari brothers for Modern Records to record "The Wallflower" with James. "The Wallflower" reached number two on the rhythm and blues charts in February 1955 but was undercut in the wider market by a rushed-out cover version by Georgia Gibbs on Mercury Records. In fact, the very first time she was recorded in studio, they used the first take she recorded and it became number one on the top 100 songs in the nation. The song's royalties were divided between Hank Ballard, Etta James and Johnny Otis, and its huge success attracted the attention of the R&B world, resulting in James going on tour with Little Richard. On the tour, according to James, she witnessed and experienced situations to which minors are not usually privy, and she allegedly acquired a drug habit. Today Etta has a troublesome personality which may have resulted from her past habits.

Career in the 50s

Before too long, "The Wallflower" was a #1 hit on the R&B charts of 1955. The song was later a hit in the white market for Georgia Gibbs, re-written as "Dance with Me, Henry". Soon after the song's success, The Peaches and Etta parted company, but this did not halt her career. She continued to record and release albums throughout much of the decade, and enjoyed more success. Her follow-up, "Good Rockin' Daddy" was released and became another hit in the fifties. Other songs however, such as "Tough Lover" and "W-O-M-A-N" failed to gain any significant success at all. James toured with Johnny "Guitar" Watson and Otis Redding in the fifties and has cited Watson as the most significant influence on her style.

The Chess Years in the 60s

In 1960, Etta signed a recording contract with Chess Records. Little did she know that she would have the biggest success of her career from this recording label, recording her biggest and most memorable hits. This recording company went into high gear with James, releasing many duets with her then boyfriend, the married Harvey Fuqua, who was then the lead singer of the Moonglows. One of her duets with Fuqua, called "If I Can't Have You", became a hit on the R&B charts in 1960. As a solo artist however, she had more enduring success. One of her first singles released by Chess in 1960 was called "All I Could Do Was Cry". This Blues number became a big hit for James on the R&B charts in 1960. James' sassy vibe added a significant touch of personality to the song. Leonard Chess, one of the founders of Chess Records, helped James along the way. He saw the potential for James to go into a more Pop-oriented direction. Therefore, James started recording more pop tunes for the label.

The year 1961 became a year of great change for James. In 1961 came the release of one of her first pop-oriented tunes called "At Last". The song became a big hit in 1961, reaching #2 on the R&B charts. The song even went as far as #22 on the Pop charts that year, proving that the Pop crossover direction was becoming successful for her. Although it may have turned out to be less of a hit than expected on the Pop charts, it still made the Top 30. The song became her signature song and the song most people remember her by.[2] Her career had not ended yet though. More success came, following the success of "At Last". Other songs such as "Trust In Me" became hits for her, following the success of her signature tune. The 1962 tune "Something's Got a Hold On Me" (recorded in the UK by Elkie Brooks), showed more of James' Gospel side, a genre she had sung since childhood.

Her 1963 album Etta James Rocks the House, which was cut at Nashville's "New Era" club also gave her career a boost. She had other big hits in the 1960s, but mainly on the R&B charts. The song "Pushover" was a hit for her in 1963. Other hits followed, like "Stop the Wedding", "Fool That I Am" and "Don't Cry Baby", which were all hits for her between 1961 and 1963. From this, James became one of the most successful R&B artists of the 1960s, having many more Top Ten and Top Twenty hit singles on the charts. She has been classified as one of the pioneers of the Blues, being acclaimed to the ranks of artists like B.B. King. Performing in Memphis, Tennessee, the city where blues started didn't hurt James into making her into a blues icon. Between 1965 and 1967, not much other success had followed, in terms of chart success. However, this wasn't to last for very long, in 1967, she would release another single that would become a big hit again, giving her comeback into music once more.

The Chess Years in the 70s, 80s and Onward

In 1967, Etta was ready to release her next hit single. The song was called "Tell Mama" and it became a Top Ten hit on the R&B charts that year. The song showed James' comeback, after a dry period of no hits for almost four years. The song made James a household name once more. The follow-up also proved to be just as successful as "Tell Mama" was for her. The song was called "Security" and proved that James had staying power on the charts again. After that, less success came, but James was still on the charts regularly. Despite the death of Leonard Chess, Etta James stayed with the Chess label into 1975. Towards the end of the Chess years though, James went into more rock-based songs. Her career however did not stop once the Chess years came to an end. Etta recorded for numerous other labels and continued to release albums, like 1978's Deep In the Night by Atlantic Records.

Despite a dry period during the early to mid 80s, Etta got back on track and began to record music again. She received accolades for her 1981 rendition of Randy Newman's "God's Song". Her 1988 album Seven Year Itch proved this comeback capability. The album showed more James' Soul side. In 1989, Etta recorded the song "Avenue D" with David A. Stewart of Eurythmics fame. The song was featured on the soundtrack to the Robert Wise film "Rooftops". She also performed with the Grateful Dead for two shows in 1982 demonstrating the diveristy of her admirers. Into the 1990s, she continued to record and perform. Her albums widely varied in styles and genres of music. Her 1992 album The Right Time was another Soul album that was produced by Elektra Records. The album was upbeat as well. She began to record more Jazz music as well, which became the subject for many of her 1990s albums. In 1998 she released a Christmas album called An Etta James Christmas. To a younger generation, Etta is known for the Muddy Waters song "I Just Wanna Make Love to You", used in television commercials for Coca-Cola and for John Smith's bitter (beer). The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry and Foghat have also recorded the song. Etta's version was a surprise Top 10 UK hit in 1995. Drug-related and romantic problems interfered with her career, but James managed to maintain a career throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Later in life, James struggled with obesity. She reached more than 400 pounds, experienced mobility and knee problems, and often needed a wheelchair. In 2003, James underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost over 200 pounds. James was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. She was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001. Her pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. In 2003 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked her #62 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. She is still touring in 2006. James won three Grammys: best jazz vocal performance (for Mystery Lady in 1994), Best Contemporary Blues album (for Let's Roll in 2003) and Best Traditional Blues album (for Blues to the Bone in 2004). A new album was also released in 2006 called All the Way, which was released by RCA Records.

Etta James performed at the top world jazz festivals in the world, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977, 1989, 1990, and 1993, performed nine times at the legendary Monterey Jazz Festival, and the San Francisco Jazz Festival five times.
An article written by Bonnie Raitt for Ettas 2005 birthday

By Bonnie Raitt

Posted Apr 22, 2005 12:00 AM

Etta James is simply one of the best singers I've ever heard. She's ferocious -- sassy and incredibly sexy. Not sexy in a conventional, dolled- up way like, say, the Supremes. Etta is earthy and gritty, ribald and out-there in a way that few performers have the guts to be. From the first time I heard her as a teenager, with songs like "Tell Mama," "At Last," "I'd Rather Go Blind" -- there was just something about that ache I heard that got me bad. Still does.

There's a lot going on in Etta James' voice -- a lot of pain, a lot of life but, most of all, a lot of strength. Etta has struggled through a few lifetimes of personal heartache and somehow came out the other side. Her autobiography Rage to Survive is an amazing book. Her story is a testament to survival and the difficulties that seem to come with the territory for female singers -- drugs and alcohol, money and weight -- and, of course, trouble with men. Maybe that's why she could slay you with that phrasing from such a young age: She had the heartbreak to back it up.

Etta has clearly influenced people like Janis Joplin and me, and now people like Susan Tedeschi and Joss Stone. Anybody who has a bluesy side to what they do can point to Etta James as the bridge between R&B, blues and pop singing. You can't overestimate her influence. And she's continued to stretch and grow as a singer, creating an incredible body of work for six decades and counting. Check out her gorgeous versions of those Billie Holiday songs, or the Eagles' "Take It to the Limit," or "Sugar on the Floor" -- there's just nobody better.

A few years ago, she got an award from the Blues Foundation at the House of Blues in L.A. She came out onstage and said something like, "I know the difference between a diva and a beaver, and there's a lot of beavers out there but only a few divas." It was classic, and she could get away with it because she's packin' -- she's got the goods to say whatever she wants. She has an incredible generosity and warmth of spirit, but she also doesn't take any shit from anybody. It's that dignity and warrior spirit that have pulled her through. Over the years, Etta's been a real hero and role model to me and, since the early part of my career, a real friend, too.

There's a comparison with Etta and Ray Charles that goes way beyond addiction in their personal lives. Like Ray Charles, Etta brought the passion of gospel, R&B and gutbucket raw soul music into the mainstream in a way that very few people have ever crossed over. They were both musical revolutionaries. They're both one of a kind. I can only hope someday we'll be seeing movies about Etta, and Ruth Brown, too. And let's do it while they're alive.

Etta Hospitalized

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Blues singer Etta James is in stable condition in a Los Angeles hospital, suffering from complications following abdominal surgery, her manager said on Wednesday.

The 69-year-old rock 'n' roll pioneer was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, following the mid-June surgery, Lupe De Leon wrote in an email to Reuters.

James hopes to be well enough by the end of August to join blues icon B.B. King and soul veteran Al Green on a tour that began in Florida on Tuesday.

"If it had been left solely up to her, she would have checked herself out of the hospital and started the tour regardless of her delicate health," De Leon said. "However, her doctor advised that were she to do so, it would put her at very great risk."

R&B singer Chaka Khan is substituting for James on the tour.

James helped pioneer rock 'n' roll in the mid-1950s with tunes such as "The Wallflower" and "Good Rockin' Daddy." She diversified into mainstream blues, soul and R&B during the 1960s, after signing with Chess Records. The three-time Grammy winner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and remains an active recording artist.

A new compilation called "Etta James Jazz" was released last week on June 5th. The songs were all recorded between 1962-1970.All have appeared on various Etta albums originally rekeased in the 60's with the exception of track 11, Misty. It was recorded during the same session as "Tell Mama", but not released until The Complete Shoal Sessions CD in 2001. Its a great listen to hear all these standards together as opposed to spread out over one cd or another.

Mystery REVEALED !!! The QUEINTESSENTIAL Etta James song......

Turns out I'M NOT CRAZY.
Yet.

The E.J. song i hadn't heard in YEARS (except with fading hope in my head.... ) - DOES exist, as i remember it....

And it sounds even better for all my effort in trackin it down.

ALL PRAISE BE TO JOHNNY.

I was also surprised at how many HERE hadn't heard it at all.

This was one of the first of hers' i'd ever heard... and still few hit me like it does...

So thanks to all who helped find OTHER songs about cigarettes... (smile)
Ya'll are in for a treat .....

( HOPE Johnny doesn't mind me reposting his link here - he put it in the previous post....)

http://jmgthatsme.tripod.com/bootstomp

(BUT - a partial mystery remains.., Wanted to include the lyrics (really good 'old school' lyrics...)
BUt after Gggle and my fave lyric sites .. ONLY turned up words to A DIFFERENT 'Only Time Will Tell' by her....!!!

NOT this one.....

Curiouser and curiouser....

So surrised how 'hard' this was to find...
It's one of her best, for me....

to purchase? I love Etta James...I discovered her while I was in college in 2000...the first song I heard was "A Sunday Kind of Love," and then I realized she was the singer of "At Last." I am going to see her in two weeks at the Doheny Blues Festival near San Diego. Anyone going? Got nervous though, 'cause I heard she cancelled some concerts...hopefully not this one.

Does anyone know if the Austin City Limits concert she did last year will be available to purchase on DVD?

Have You Ever Felt This Way?

Probably one of the most romantic songs ever, used in weddings and movies, etc. to signify the UTMOST in that majestic, sweeping romantic-love feeling....Have any of you ever felt this way about someone? (It's even better to hear Etta sing it...so much more passion than mere words on a computer can convey...)

At last
My love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

Ohh yeah yeah
At last

The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you

I found a dream, that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known

Ohh yeah yeah?
You smiled, you smiled

Oh and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
for you are mine....

At Last

Autobiography - Rage to Survive

Curious if anyone has read the book. Any thoughts on it. I keep putting it off and off. Any personal reviews would be much appreciated and sure everyone else would love to know your opions.

Going to post a few reviews of the book (courtersy of Amazon editorial reviews)

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Born to a 14-year-old mother and raised by surrogate parents, blues and R&B star James started singing gospel in church at five, was discovered at 14 and had a rapid rise to fame. Nevertheless, her story is a disturbing saga of drug addiction, jail sentences for writing bad checks and stealing prescription drugs, involvements with the wrong men and anger at a disruptive and unstable mother who has refused to reveal who her daughter's father is. It's easy to see why James says she has been "raging through life." She claims it's the rage that keeps her going. Now, at the age of 56, she reports she has kicked the drug habit, reached an understanding with her mother and settled down with her husband and children, letting off steam by dirt biking. Ritz, who has written biographies of Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson, spent two years traveling with James and listening to her talk about her life. Here he captures the craziness and the pain. Photos not seen by PW. Author tour.

From Booklist
Growing up in south central LA, James stood out at an early age. Her church choir leader tutored the little girl with the big voice to sing with "vocal fire," and after attracting notice in gospel circles, she had her first chart success with "Roll with Me, Henry," a "pushy little jiveass reply" to rhythm and blues great Hank Ballard's "Work with Me, Annie." Her record's producer was Johnny Otis, one of many other stars she has something to say about. Others include Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and whiter-than-white Georgia Gibbs, whose "Dance with Me, Henry" covered and outsold Etta's hit. Besides whites stealing her thunder, James encountered underhanded financial dealings, drug abuse and addiction, and transitory love affairs. In other words, her story is a typical black pop-music as-told-to bio, though better than many of the others. Mike Tribby--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
"Etta tells it like it is. Couldn't put the thing down. Great book!"

Book Description
One of the great women of American music, equally at home singing blues and jazz, Etta regales us with tales of her chaotic childhood, the stars she has known, and her troubled trip to stardom in this mesmerizing autobiography.

Inside Flap Copy
Packed with intimate anecdotes about pop music's legendary talents, Rage to Survive offers a graphic chronicle of one woman's triumphs and tragedies--the rollercoaster life of Etta James, the grand diva of Rhythm and Blues. Photos.--

Carnegie Hall performance

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060622/music_nm/review_music_etta_dc;_ylt=AkPprRVbhNcMVg20t09N4ptxFb8C;_ylu=X3oDMTA0cDJlYmhvBHNlYwM-

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - She may have lost a considerable amount of weight, but singer Etta James has lost none of her vocal sass, as demonstrated by her performance Tuesday night at Carnegie Hall.

Performing a set that featured several of her trademark blues and R&B classics, this veteran performer, appearing with singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi in a JVC Jazz Festival show titled "Ladies Sing the Blues," brought the house down.

James is now in her late 60s, but in terms of both vocal style and demeanor she remains a tough and highly sensual presence.

Whether playfully sticking out her tongue at an errant stagehand or making her guitarist kneel at her feet while delivering the sexually charged Johnny "Guitar" Watson" number "I Want to Ta-Ta You Baby," she belied her age with her youthful vigor and smoky, still-potent voice.

The singer essentially ignored her recent RCA Victor release "All the Way," a collection of jazz-tinged covers of such contemporary songs as "Purple Rain" and "I Believe I Can Fly," in favor of her standard set list.

But it was hard to be disappointed by such numbers as "I'd Rather Go Blind," "Sunday Kind of Love" and her classic "At Last," all delivered in sterling renditions that displayed a more assured vocal style than she has exhibited in recent years.

Expertly backed by the Roots Band, featuring a three-man horn section, the singer -- who often ignored the chair that had been placed center stage for her -- delivered a sterling 90-minute set that alternated between blues, jazz and funk.

Highlights included "Damn Your Eyes," which segued into a forceful "Besame Mucho"; the Al Green classic "Love and Happiness," during which James showed off her newly svelte figure with sensual dance moves; and a tender "A Lover Is Forever," featuring only quiet guitar accompaniment.

Opening act Tedeschi and her four-piece band were hampered by the notorious Carnegie acoustics, which so often plague amplified acts.

While the singer possesses an admirably sweet vocal style and impressive blues guitar skills, her set -- featuring a well-chosen mixture of covers (Dylan's "Lord Protect My Child," Otis Redding's "Security") and originals (including one rocking number co-written with husband Derek Trucks) -- was marred by a sound system that too often reduced it to sludge.

The jems are the suprises you may not expect. Simply Reds "Holding Back The Tears" and the 2 faves John Lennons "Imagine" and Princes "Purple Rain".

The Purple Rain is my favorite track on the album so far.

Happy BIrthday 67th Etta!!!

Etta James (b. Jamesetta Hawkins January 25, 1938 in Los Angeles, California) is an American Blues, R&B and gospel singer.

She received her first professional vocal training at the age of 5, from James Earle Hines, musical director of the Echoes of Eden choir at St. Paul Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Her family moved to San Francisco, California in 1950, and in 1952 the trio (the Creolettes) she had formed with two of her friends came to the attention of Johnny Otis. Otis reversed the syllables of her first name to give her her stage name and began recording her. Her first record, and her first R & B hit, was her own composition, "The Wallflower (Dance with Me, Henry)," an answer song to Hank Ballard's "Work with Me, Annie." She recorded it in 1954 with the Otis band and Richard Berry, who sang the second vocal. The song was later a hit in the white market for Georgia Gibbs, re-written as "Dance with Me, Henry". She briefly recorded as Etta James & the Peaches, releasing several hits before signing to Chess Records in 1960.

James released several duets with Harvey Fuqua (of The Moonglows) that became major R&B hits, as well as her classic "At Last". However, her mainstream success was limited. In 1967, James recorded "Tell Mama" and "I'd Rather Go Blind", with "At Last" perhaps her most enduring songs, in Muscle Shoals. Her singing is characterized by accomplished vocal technique and strong jazz influences. She won the Grammy for best jazz vocal in 1994 for her CD Mystery Lady, a collection of songs associated with Billie Holliday, and in 2004 won the Grammy for best contemporary blues album with Let's Roll. In 2003 she received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

To a younger generation, Etta is known for the Muddy Waters song "I Just Wanna Make Love To You", used in television commercials for Coca-Cola and for John Smith's bitter. The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry and Foghat have also recorded the song.

Drug-related and romantic problems interfered with her career, but James managed to maintain a career throughout the latter half of the 20th century and was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame. Her pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

In 2003 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Etta James
Etta will be on the new season of Austin City Limits (check local listings for possible different times)

October 22
Music legend Etta James has been wowing critics and fans with a music legacy that has spanned more than 50 years. Hot off the success of her 2004 release, Blues to the Bone, the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award winner continues to be one of the most respected R&B singers in America. Highlights include "All the Way Down" and "At Last."

Got to see her live in concert in a really small venue in down state Illinois. It was Feb of the year she was inducted into the R n R hall of fame, i think 1992 or 1993. Even though she didnt get up and move alot the amount of energy she emitted was amazing. and the voice lives its a force of nature.
